Portfolio Entry #15: Academic Articles

via GIPHY

Abstract based on the article Academic Freedom: International Warning Signs (by Philip G.)

Abstract:

Societies depend on free expression in academe to provide a valuable independent voice for social analysis and criticism and to strengthen civil society. However, academic freedom has been threatened for many years. The purpose of the article is to expose the idea that countries around the world, such as Germany, Russia, the USA, Nigeria, and China have found distinct ways of restricting and censoring certain themes that are considered not acceptable and favorable for the government of the day, that is why academic freedom has been under attack. The article brings to light that the academic community has taken so much time to realize the situation and to respond to it.

Metacognitive Analysis:

Writing an abstract helps us to summarize the most important themes of an academic article. Due to the fact that being a student implies reading many papers, it is really important to learn how to make a brief summary in which we could include not only the main idea but also the purpose of the article and its findings. By doing that, it is easier to study the main topics and to remember the essential points of the text.

Portfolio Entry #7: Writing and Academic Writing

One of the primary things that a teacher should think before giving a writing task is the stages that it involves. The first one is the pre-writing task in which we have to design a task step by step. That implies thinking about the subskills students will need, such as topics, background knowledge, vocabulary, grammar, discourse, etc. For instance, if the focus is on the topic we can ask the students what are they going to write about and,  what notions they want to reflect on the writing. Besides, we can use associograms to help them brainstorm, prompts by including images, music, or interviews which help them to contextualize what they are going to write. All of them are fruitful for generating ideas, topics, or building vocabulary for their writing. The second stage is during-writing. While students write, the teacher has to give guidance in order to improve their writing, for example, he/she can ask what caused the event they are writing about or help them to describe the ma...

Portfolio Entry #0: WELCOME!

“Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts. You need to start somewhere.” –  Anne Lamott “You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. That is the process in which we get involved, learning by try and error about language, culture, and teaching .  I hope you like it!

Porfolio Entry #9: Writing Project: Refugees

via GIPHY We refugees by Benjamin Zephaniah We Refugees | A Benjamin Zephaniah Poem from Red Café on Vimeo . The poem “we can all be refugees”, written by Benjamin Zephaniah, faces us to the reality of many people around the world. The author of the poem mentioned some reasons by which he, like other people, was tortured, for instance, singing a song, praying for a different God, or having black skin were source of discrimination. The refugees as well as our ancestors had to move on to different places because of political, religious, cultural, natural, or war conflicts. As the poem mentioned, we can all be refugees due to the fact that we did not just appear. All of us descend from migrants, which means that the world is shaped by people from many places who had to change their lives radically to start again in a different place, that is why all of us can be refugees. Therefore, Zephaniah described those who tortured and discriminated him as “his brother in his land” because he s...
