Portfolio Entry #10: Essay

via GIPHY  The dark side of  inclusion  Being a refugee implies suffering discrimination from part of society, citizens from other countries, and some political leaders. Asylum seekers are forced to migrate because of the persecution they suffered in their native land and are received by other nations which should ensure their safety. Even though there are some countries which work in favour of them, there are others which do not pay attention to their needs. Besides, refugees are disliked, prejudged, and humiliated by a great amount of the population around the world. That is the reason why they should have stronger legal protection not only to guarantee a secure entry to their new country but also to protect them from xenophobic acts during their stay.  Displaced people are not welcomed in their own country because of several reasons. Porfolio Entry #9: Writing Project: Refugees

via GIPHY We refugees by Benjamin Zephaniah We Refugees | A Benjamin Zephaniah Poem from Red Café on Vimeo . The poem “we can all be refugees”, written by Benjamin Zephaniah, faces us to the reality of many people around the world. The author of the poem mentioned some reasons by which he, like other people, was tortured, for instance, singing a song, praying for a different God, or having black skin were source of discrimination. The refugees as well as our ancestors had to move on to different places because of political, religious, cultural, natural, or war conflicts. As the poem mentioned, we can all be refugees due to the fact that we did not just appear. All of us descend from migrants, which means that the world is shaped by people from many places who had to change their lives radically to start again in a different place, that is why all of us can be refugees. Therefore, Zephaniah described those who tortured and discriminated him as “his brother in his land” because he s...

via GIPHY This entry is connected to "The Stu dy of La nguage" written by George Yule. The Selected chapters and presentations involve the analysis of language form, meaning, and context. Enjoy it!  Chapter #1: The origins of language There are different theories that explain the origin of language, one of the most famous is the religious theory. It shares the belief that language was provided as a gift by God. The idea was then, that if language was God-given, any human would speak it spontaneously.  Regarding the natural sound source and the “bow-wow” theory,  primitive words could have been imitations of natural sounds which early men and women heard around them.  These words or noises are examples of what is known as onomatopoeia.  However, we might be rather skeptical about a view that seems to assume that a language is only a set of words used as “names” for things. It has also been suggested that the original sounds of language may have come from the expr...
