 The dark side of  inclusion

Being a refugee implies suffering discrimination from part of society, citizens from other countries, and some political leaders. Asylum seekers are forced to migrate because of the persecution they suffered in their native land and are received by other nations which should ensure their safety. Even though there are some countries which work in favour of them, there are others which do not pay attention to their needs. Besides, refugees are disliked, prejudged, and humiliated by a great amount of the population around the world. That is the reason why they should have stronger legal protection not only to guarantee a secure entry to their new country but also to protect them from xenophobic acts during their stay.

Displaced people are not welcomed in their own country because of several reasons. To begin with, it could be for having a different race or skin colour. In addition,  their religion can be a cause of discrimination since it is not the imparted one by the government. Besides, at civil wartime, those people who disagree with the status quo are persecuted and consequently, they are forced to flee their country to survive. Last but not least, their nationality, which plays a key part because there will always be some people who do not want to receive them because of their nation. Therefore, their safety is under threat in every part of the world.

Segregated people are tortured by racist citizens from the country which is supposed to protect them in many ways. Some of the refugees are psychologically abused by being insulted or denigrated, others are humiliated physically by being hit and spat at their workplace. For instance, Africa was the scene of one of the biggest xenophobic acts on 25 March 2019 where riots targeting African immigrants broke out in Sydenham, Jadhu Place, and Overport areas of Durban. Around one hundred people attacked businesses owned by foreign nationals resulting in around fifty people seeking shelter in a local police station and mosque. The rioters, as well as many other racist people, had the purpose of making them understand that they should be supposed to work in their own country.

Discrimination does not come just from citizens’ beliefs, whereas it is promoted and encouraged by some of the political leaders around the world. In fact, some of them base their political career on the idea of returning refugees and migrants to their country of origin regardless of whether they are well received or not. The main problem with this conception is the lack of promotion and protection of human rights which creates an environment that promotes xenophobic manifestations, such as those committed in the USA. For example, Trump is probably the most xenophobic political leader in the United States of America history. During his government, immigrants from mostly Muslim countries were restricted and the refugee admissions were drastically reduced. These actions led Americans into a conflict between migrants and citizens born in the USA which ended up in violent acts.

All of the mentioned conducts are against human rights, hence it is important to revise state policies around the world. Although some of them defend refugees, they are not enough to ensure that they can live their life freely without any threat. It is necessary to make people realize the importance of being fair with those who beg for help. Furthermore, all of us are part of the same world and consequently, none of us is exempt from living in this kind of situation. That is the reason why we all have to be respected everywhere no matter our culture, religion, or race.

Portfolio Entry #7: Writing and Academic Writing

One of the primary things that a teacher should think before giving a writing task is the stages that it involves. The first one is the pre-writing task in which we have to design a task step by step. That implies thinking about the subskills students will need, such as topics, background knowledge, vocabulary, grammar, discourse, etc. For instance, if the focus is on the topic we can ask the students what are they going to write about and,  what notions they want to reflect on the writing. Besides, we can use associograms to help them brainstorm, prompts by including images, music, or interviews which help them to contextualize what they are going to write. All of them are fruitful for generating ideas, topics, or building vocabulary for their writing. The second stage is during-writing. While students write, the teacher has to give guidance in order to improve their writing, for example, he/she can ask what caused the event they are writing about or help them to describe the ma...

Porfolio Entry #9: Writing Project: Refugees

via GIPHY We refugees by Benjamin Zephaniah We Refugees | A Benjamin Zephaniah Poem from Red Café on Vimeo . The poem “we can all be refugees”, written by Benjamin Zephaniah, faces us to the reality of many people around the world. The author of the poem mentioned some reasons by which he, like other people, was tortured, for instance, singing a song, praying for a different God, or having black skin were source of discrimination. The refugees as well as our ancestors had to move on to different places because of political, religious, cultural, natural, or war conflicts. As the poem mentioned, we can all be refugees due to the fact that we did not just appear. All of us descend from migrants, which means that the world is shaped by people from many places who had to change their lives radically to start again in a different place, that is why all of us can be refugees. Therefore, Zephaniah described those who tortured and discriminated him as “his brother in his land” because he s...
